Sydney-based, Indigenous-owned agency working at the intersection of storytelling, strategic communication and community engagement.

Never generic. Always authentic.

Ashwater is an Indigenous-owned agency bringing together award-winning production, strategic communications and community engagement under one roof. We help government, corporate, brand and cultural partners communicate complex ideas through authentic, human-centred stories that connect and endure

We create narrative-led storytelling for organisations — work designed to connect with audiences and endure beyond a single moment. We partner with government, corporate, brand and cultural organisations to bring clarity to complex ideas, shaping stories that are authentic, human-centred and aligned to purpose.

Founded by Ash Gibb, whose background spans social work, community development/ engagement and filmmaking, our approach is grounded in a deep understanding of people, culture and communication. This allows us to uncover and tell stories with nuance, care and meaning — and to work credibly within complex, sensitive or culturally significant environments.

Combining award-winning cinematography with documentary-led storytelling and strategic communications expertise, we create work that resonates — content that is not only visually compelling, but genuinely, measurably impactful.

our approach

Storytelling was never content. Long before the term existed, storytelling was infrastructure, carrying navigation knowledge, law, kinship, identity and collective memory across generations. Some of the most sophisticated storytelling systems in human history developed within Aboriginal Australia, where song, story, ceremony and oral tradition functioned as an interconnected communication system, one that held communities together and carried knowledge no single document ever could.

We believe that same principle still holds for organisations today. In a world producing more content than ever, much of it generic, automated and disposable, the organisations that cut through are the ones whose communication is intentional: grounded in real understanding of purpose, audience and outcome, not just volume.

At Ashwater, we work closely with our clients to understand the full landscape of a project and the people behind it, its purpose, its stakeholders, the challenges it needs to navigate, and the outcomes it’s ultimately working toward. Whether that’s a single organisational story or a major infrastructure or community project spanning years and multiple audiences, this process allows us to shape a narrative and communication strategy grounded in real intent, not just a surface brief.

Our approach combines strategy, story development, community engagement, production, digital rollout and communication thinking, ensuring every piece of content is grounded in clarity, purpose and impact. Rather than producing isolated videos, we create considered storytelling systems where each piece works together to strengthen the overall message and extend its reach, from first engagement through to final delivery.

This results in work that connects more deeply with audiences, supports broader communication objectives and delivers lasting value, in a landscape where authentic, intentional storytelling matters more than ever.

Services

We partner with organisations, brands and government to turn complex ideas into clear, compelling stories.

At the core of our work is a narrative-led approach — combining award winning production, strategic communications and genuine community engagement, grounded in a deep understanding of people, culture and communication.

We don’t create content for the sake of it. We create work with purpose — designed to connect with audiences, build trust and deliver lasting impact.

Our work has been trusted by organisations including Nestlé, Toni&Guy, Origin Energy and the Sydney Opera House, alongside local, state and Commonwealth government agencies.

Our approach is built around three core capabilities.

OUR MODEL

At Ashwater Films, we approach every project as a communication challenge — combining storytelling, strategy, community engagement and delivery to create work that connects with audiences and achieves meaningful outcomes.

We work flexibly depending on the needs of each project — supporting clients with standalone production, standalone community engagement or consultation, or a fully integrated approach spanning strategy, storytelling, engagement, delivery and measurement.

To support this, we operate in close partnership with OpenSeed, our digital partner — two independent companies sharing a creative space, working side by side as one team. That structure means clients get a cohesive, single-point-of-accountability service delivery outcome, from concept through to campaign reporting.

Together, we bring experience across government, corporate, brand and cultural sectors, supporting organisations ranging from public institutions to leading brands.

Project Partners

At Ashwater Films, we prioritise depth over volume — working with a smaller number of clients to deliver thoughtful, high-impact storytelling rather than high-volume content.

In a landscape increasingly saturated with fast, surface-level content, we focus on stories that are grounded in real people, lived experience and genuine connection — work that builds trust, communicates clearly and stands the test of time.

We partner with organisations who value authenticity, clarity and craft — taking the time to understand the people, context and communication challenges behind each project. This approach allows us to create work that is considered, meaningful and built to last.

Our projects are often developed as narrative-led suites, designed to communicate with intention and deliver long-term value, rather than short-term outputs.

Through our work, we have supported organisations across government, corporate and cultural sectors, including collaborations with leading brands and public institutions.
